What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small file that a website asks your browser to store on your device. The next time you visit the site, the browser sends the cookie back, allowing the site to remember things — like a logged-in session, a language preference, or, in our case, whether you've already chosen your cookie settings. Cookies are not programs, they are not viruses, and they cannot read other files on your computer. Modern browsers limit them to roughly 4 kilobytes each.

Cookies this site sets

We are unfussy. The site sets a small number of cookies, and most of them are off by default.

Strictly necessary

PHPSESSID — a session cookie used by the contact form to protect against cross-site request forgery. It expires when you close the browser. Without it, the contact form cannot accept submissions.
hyvora_cc_v1 — a single value that records the choice you made on the cookie banner ("accept" or "reject"). This is set in your browser's local storage rather than a cookie, but the principle is identical. Removing it will cause the banner to reappear.

Optional

Analytics — if you press Accept all on the cookie banner, we may load a privacy-respecting analytics script that records page views and approximate region. The script does not use third-party advertising networks and the data is anonymised. Press Reject optional on the banner and no analytics are loaded.

Where we don't go

We do not run advertising trackers. We do not run social-network beacons. We do not pass cookie identifiers to data brokers. The site is small, the analytics needs are small, and there is no benefit to anyone — including us — in setting more cookies than are needed to run the contact form.

Changing your preference

The small cookie icon at the bottom-left corner of every page reopens the banner. Choose again, and the new preference will take effect immediately. You can also clear cookies and local storage from your browser's settings — the banner will then reappear on your next visit.
